Ormylia Evangelism Monastery

The Evangelism Monastery in Ormylia Halkidiki located approximately 8 klm from our accommodation. It is located in a picturesque green area surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. In the monastery lives several novices and 106 nuns. It is believed that this is the largest female abode in Greece by numbers of the inhabitants. The monastery is popular among pilgrim and twice a year is full of visitors. Firstly, this is March25 when the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated and secondly, this is July 22, a feast of honor of St.Magdalene.

Every Sunday a church service is held in the temple of the monastery, during which you can enjoy singing of the choir which is declared as the one of the best female choirs in Greece. After the ceremony the sisters are willing to talk to you. It is noteworthy that many nuns have medical education and they work in the medical center at the monastery.

There was a workshop of painting and weaving work, in which sisters create embroidery for the vestments of priests. Nuns draw icons in the traditional Byzantine style and publish books; all this can be bought at a local store.
